At the office of All Smiles Bethesda, we understand that many patients are anxious while visiting a dentist or while undergoing dental treatment. It is our goal to ensure your complete comfort with us. That is why we offer sedation dentistry options to help relieve anxiety as we take care of your oral health.
Sedation can be administered to help patients relax during dental treatments. Conscious sedation helps the patient to stay comfortable and calm while remaining awake during treatment. You will be awake and will be able to respond to our questions and commands during the procedure.
We offer the following types of sedation:
- Inhalation Sedation: Laughing gas is a light form of sedation and is given by placing a mask over the nose. The gas is inhaled via the nose and expelled through the mouth. The sedative wears off soon after the procedure is completed, and there are almost no side effects.
- Local Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is used to numb the area of the mouth that is being treated in order to prevent the patient from feeling pain during the procedure. Local anesthesia is generally administered via injection, and a topical anesthetic is applied before this so that you don’t feel the pain of the injection. The effect of local anesthesia can last several hours after the procedure, so one should be careful not to bite down too hard on the numb area as it could lead to injury.
