Inlays and onlays are dental restorations which are used for the repair of teeth with mild to moderate decay and damage, or teeth that are cracked or fractured. They are ideal if a tooth is not damaged enough to need the protection of a dental crown but has endured enough damage that it cannot be repaired with a dental filling. Inlays and onlays are also known as indirect restorations as they are made outside of the mouth, in contrast to normal fillings that are directly placed and shaped inside the mouth.
Inlays and onlays can be manufactured using porcelain or composite resin. Dental inlays are used to treat teeth that have decay or damage between the cusps of the teeth, while onlays are used to treat decay that reaches out to one or more cusps.
To prepare your tooth, we will clean the tooth and remove damage and decay. Then, we will take an impression of your tooth. Once your custom-made restoration is complete, it will be placed on the tooth using dental bonding material.
Advantages of tooth restoration using Inlays and Onlays:
- They are almost invisible restorations since they are made to match the natural tooth color.
- The use of inlays and onlays requires less preparation for the tooth than metal fillings.
- Inlays and onlays can replace silver fillings to create a natural and healthy smile.
- They are durable.
- By protecting decayed teeth, inlays and onlays prevent the need for more extensive treatment later.
